3d Desktop

I’m not sure how useful it is to have a 3D desktop but it sure is a innovative idea. I thought the whole point of folders on your desktop was a way to make everything more organized, but these 3D desktop people think otherwise. Instead of having folders like Mac’s and PC’s do now they are introducing the idea of having it like an actual desk and having everything piled on each other.

integrate this with the multi-touch touchscreen, and it’s pretty close to reaching your hand into the screen and moving stuff around right in front of you - great work!

I wish you great success with this idea. It is revolutionary, amazing! Great work!

This doesnt make sense, it seems like something that would be a novelty to have or something that would be fun for a month, then die. I think its an interesting idea, but how many things do you “lose” on your desk or cant find. I know i dont have the tidiest desk and i know plenty of people who have their computer desktop so packed they cant even find what they have. this would just make it a hundred times worse. In reality this will never work in the real world, people are disorganized enough and this wont help out, just takes more time to “organize” things on it, and wastes time. They even had to add an “exploding piles technique” just for people to “find documents” if people just kept their stuff organized in folders, this would not be a problem. I dont know about all of you, but I know where every document is on my computer off the top of my head. My real desk though… not so much, i lose everything.

All in all - it looks like fun and would be a novelty but in a business situation, this would never work, its too clunky and ppl will lose even more stuff, just this time IN their computers…

Me wanty!

This would be an awesome interface for a tablet PC. I also liked the idea of integrating it with muilti-touch. I think that this would be a much more natural way for people to interact with computers (especially those unfamilliar with computers, like older folks.)

But seriously, I want it. Can I download a beta? PLEEEEEEASE?

Wow, I have always thought about something like this (just day dreaming and what not) but always figured it would just be a novelty because of how unorginized it would become. But you have so many revolutionary features that would make an untidy desktop orginized in a matter of seconds. Or even if it is untidy you can still find files quickly and easily. Like the others said this would be a great thing for a tablet PC (for any PC really). I hope some software company makes you guys an offer for all of this, whew, cool stuff.

I am always amused by programmers who try to create interfaces based on physical things, like the 3D desktop.

They always fail.

Most programmers should never be allowed to create interfaces.

Very interesting ideas; complex and powerful.

And VRML changed the way everyone worked too (not!). This is very much a “cool-looking” UI desperately in search of a purpose. If I had to chase all those endlessly twitching, bulging, squirming and scattering little tiles around that virtual desktop all day, it’d be my *real* computer screen scuttling across my *real* desk before the week was out. Entertaining stuff, but totally impractical for all but perhaps a few vertical markets.

I like it, more information on the desktop (easily accessible) and easy way to sort through, clean up. Improves upon ctrl-clicking with lasso and throw. Would like to make piles for filing in drawer and / or file. Or maybe alternative desktops for different purposes or projects. This is especially handy for the files I need to review, but not right now. Allows a quick drop on the desktop for later viewing or filing - just like the actual desktop. May not be suitable for the underworked or over organized!

I love this!!, Imagine this interface on 50″ panel. Remind anyone of Minority Report.

Although it looks fun, I concur that I am happy with my own tidy desktop and this feature, after the initial fun of playing with it, could only serve to make an untidy desktop even worse. While my real desktop is always in a mess, my pc desktop is always tidy, always reational. I’d like to keep it that way. Now find a way to make me keep my real desktop as tidy, without having to overcome my abhorrance of real filing!

[...] A 3d desktop with touchscreen and XGL on a Linux computer. This is similar to the previous 3d desktop we posted but this one seems more practical. [...]
